On May 4, Kamasi Washington performed the excellent three-hour album The Epic in its entirety at the Regent Theater in Los Angeles. To bring the album to life, he was accompanied by his band the Next Step (featuring Thundercat) plus a full choir and string section conducted by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. (The lineup is listed here.)
The show was filmed for NPR’s “Jazz Night in America” series and condensed into a two-hour documentary featuring interviews with Washington, his band, and his father Rickey Washington. Watch it below.
