Thanks to Paris Haute Couture Week, we saw some pretty major A-List beauty moments over the past five days, but none struck us quite like Lupita Nyong’o’s look at the Lancôme 80th Anniversary Celebration. We chatted with the actress’s go-to beauty guru, Nick Barose, to get the details on her ultra-glam lipstick and eyeliner.

“Her sparkly Prada gown called for something dramatic, so I went with a 1940s movie-star glamour with a little disco flare on the makeup,” says Barose.
Dramatic in this case, meant a vibrant ruby-red lip and a sharply lined cat-eye, which he gave “a modern twist” by adding a pop of metallic shimmer to the top of her eyeliner. “I kept it in harmony with the dress by keeping the eyes sparkly,” he says.
So how do you nail that double dose of glam at home? It’s way less complicated than it looks.
First, instead of jumping right to your liquid liner — which can be pain to fix if you don’t have robot-like precision — Barose recommends tracing the winged shaped with black eyeshadow. It’s softer and gives you a better guide for applying liner. (He did exactly that for Nyong’o’s look, here, with Lancôme Color Design 5 Pan Eyeshadow Palette in Lavender Grace and Lancôme Artliner in Noir.)

Another pro tip? Although, it seems counterintuitive, don’t begin at the inner-corner of your eyes. “I like to start at the tails first to decide how long and what angle [the cat eye should be],” he says. “Then I line the entire lid and connect it all together. It’s easier to break the process down into steps rather than trying to draw one continuous line, which can end up looking lopsided.” (Heard that!)
After a few flicks of Lancôme Hypnôse Mascara in Black, Barose finished off the look with a bold red lip — first lining Nyongo’s lips with Lancôme’s Le Lipstique in Sheer Chocolate, and then filling it in with L’Absolu Rouge in Saffron Silk.
