Foot-In-Mouth Disease appears to be rampant nowadays. Yesterday, it was Lil Wayne and the US Flag situation. Now, I think Serena Williams might have a bit of explaining to do. During an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Serena made some controversial comments regarding the Steubenville Rape case, where a 16 year old girl was raped by two teenage boys after getting drunk and passing out at a party.

“Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don’t know. I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you: Don’t take drinks from other people. She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously, I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”

To me, if you have a statement where you say something like “I’m not so-and-so, BUT…” then the rest of the statement is pretty much the opposite of what you said first. She said she wasn’t blaming the girl, but then proceeds to blame her. And when you’re talking about cases of rape, victim blaming is very dangerous. I feel like that’s the reason some rapes don’t get reported. The victim doesn’t want to be blamed for allowing it to happen to them. The interview itself is a decent one but that section right there kind of took the wind out of it’s sails. But is she the only one who feels this way?
