James Avery, “Uncle Phil” Dies AT Age 68

It’s with sad news that we are reporting the death of James Avery, known to most of us as Uncle Phil on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, although his depth of talent spans several decades. TMZ claims to have the exclusive (I don’t know how you can have the exclusive on someone’s death), but it is in fact Alsonso Ribeiro (Carlton) who has confirmed the news of his of TV dad’s death:

I’m deeply saddened to say that James Avery has passed away. He was a second father to me. I miss him greatly. {via Baller Alert}

A great, well respected actor is gone today. He leaves behind his wife of 25 years, Barbabra Avery and no kids. His cause of death has yet to be released, but we do know he died last night at the hospital after complications from open heart surgery. When the family is ready to tell us more, then we will post an update, but I’m not really sure I want the details of his death coming from TMZ. I certainly think he deserves more. RIP!

*Earlier reports said that James Avery was 65, the actor was born November 27, 1945 and died December 31, 2013…making him 68 at the time of death.
