A runaway thought can travel farther than any road. On truant, Minneapolis artist and producer Student 1 transforms distraction, grief, addiction, and self-examination into an unpredictable yet deeply engaging listening experience. The twelve-track project moves with a restless spirit, constantly shifting between funky grooves, experimental textures, vulnerable confessionals, and sharp observations about personal growth. What makes the record compelling is its willingness to sit inside uncomfortable emotions without pretending to have all the answers. Student 1’s songwriting feels unfiltered and human, allowing moments of uncertainty to coexist with flashes of humor, optimism, and self-awareness. His delivery remains effortlessly fluid throughout, adapting to every sonic turn while maintaining a strong sense of identity. The result is an album that feels less like a destination and more like an honest snapshot of someone learning how to move forward. He explains:
It’s inspired by the problems these moments create and have created (as well as the desire to solve them), the headspace I was in, drugs, and not being able to articulate important feelings and thoughts. There isn’t a substantial focus on this aspect outside of some subtle mentions, but I do mention the loss of a parent, as my father passed away during the making of the album.
Entirely written, mixed, and mastered by Student 1, “truant” showcases a creative vision that remains personal from beginning to end while incorporating contributions from YUSF, LEEszn, and dog owner man. Standout moments such as kevinkevinkevin, pissing myself, and the newly released idcicantbeherefortoolong highlight both his experimental instincts and melodic versatility. Director Erik Astle’s visuals further amplify the album’s offbeat personality, pairing surreal imagery with the project’s themes of emotional disconnection and self-discovery. The release arrives ahead of a summer tour alongside Ghais Guevara, with stops across major cities including Los Angeles, New York, Nashville, and multiple Texas dates. More than a collection of songs, “truant” feels like a personal inventory of lessons learned during a turbulent chapter. Catch Student 1 on the road as this next chapter unfolds on Instagram, Facebook, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok.
