Twenty Years Later, The Game Reopens The West Coast Files With “The Documentary 3”

Some legacies age quietly, while others pull back onto the boulevard with the hydraulics still working. The Game returns to the series that helped redefine his career with The Documentary 3. It’s a sprawling new album built around Compton pride, West Coast history, and the belief that Los Angeles still belongs at the center of hip-hop conversation. The feature list reads like a cross-section of eras and regions, with Drake, Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, E-40, YG, Black Thought, Larry June, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Leon Thomas, Tyga, AZ Chike, and more. That calliber of artist gives the project depth, but its identity remains rooted in the streets and imagery which shaped The Game’s original rise. Twenty years after The Documentary helped put the city back in a national spotlight, The Game is making it clear that this sequel is as much about defending a standard as extending a catalog. He said:

Everybody wanna debate who the greatest rapper out of LA is. I’m here to remind y’all what the standard was. 20 years ago I was the one who put LA back where it belonged. And I’m back to do it again.

“The Documentary 3” now gathers that renewed attention into a full-circle statement, Benny Boom’s Sticks video returns that focus to Pueblo Del Rio, while Sam King’s cinematic trailer leans into lowriders, Dayton wire wheels, Converse, and unmistakable L.A. symbolism. Every Movie Needs A Trailer and End Credits, his Gangsta Grillz projects with DJ Drama, brought his storytelling and bar work back into sharp focus, while his Verzuz appearance with YG reignited discussion around Los Angeles rap on a massive scale.
