Your current dilemma in finding the right hair products to properly moisturize your hair has left you frustrated and your curls drier than a desert. Maybe you tried a product because it’s the latest “it” product that other curly girls can’t live without. Perhaps you read the reviews and the majority of the comments contained things like “life changing” and “a must for anyone natural”, but once you tried the product on your own hair you realized not only did it not work, but you’re now stuck with a product that has no benefit for your hair.
One thing you need to realize is that products are not universal to all curl types. This is why it is crucial to understand what type of curls you have and then identify what your curls need. By reading labels and understanding ingredients, you can better educate yourself on what it is you are putting in your hair.
Still need to know what to look for when moisturizing your hair? Check out some of the best moisturizing ingredients that will keep your curls quenched.
Jojoba Oil--Your scalp produces a natural oil called sebum that keeps your scalp and hair moistened. Oftentimes, this natural oil can be stripped off when hair is washed and/or processed (i.e. styled, color treated, etc.). Jojoba oil is very similar to sebum and it’s molecular structure or chemical properties are identical. By using Jojoba oil it is like you are putting the natural oil back in your hair and scalp.
Glycerin–(also can be labeled as vegetable glycerin)–This ingredient is an alcohol that binds water together; it is instrumental and works at its best when locking in moisture in conjunction with other ingredients in hair products. It is way more water soluble than other conditioning alcohols in products and in fact has been used in cosmetics for years, as it has been a beneficial moisturizer for the skin as well. However be aware that using glycerin in a concentrated state can strip all of the moisture from the hair, creating a more coarse and frizzier texture.
Aloe Vera–We’ve always been taught that aloe vera is a great property at soothing skin. But aloe vera has great moisturizing properties for the hair too. Not only does it assist in helping your hair grow, but it also helps maintain your hair’s natural sheen and luster by locking in hair’s natural oils.
Shea Butter–This is a natural conditioner for hair and derives from the Shea-Karite tree nut, found in both East and West Africa. A great moisturizer, it soothes irritated scalps as it absorbs into the scalp but doesn’t clog pores. Because of its absorbency it does not sit on the hair but instead it latches onto the hair strands without leaving a greasy or weighed down feeling. It is also great for those that experience drier, brittle hair as it naturally softens while conditioning.
Avocado Oil–Great for damaged hair, this oil is rich in fatty acids that both strengthen and moisturize. Infused with Vitamin E this oil can also condition while the proteins it contains fortify the hair. The benefits of avocado oil also include eliminating dandruff and/or scalp psoriasis. It can also act as a natural sunscreen and helps to protect hair and scalp from harmful UV rays, which is great as we approach warmer weather.
