Now get this work. In her profile in The New York Times, Iggy Azalea let everyone in on her fashion secret: she’s super strategic about everything she wears and knows exactly how to get what she wants from designers. Her plans are working, she was named one of Vogue’s “10 Rising Style Stars of 2014,” which all but certifies her fashion street cred, and designers like Elie Saab, who dressed her for the 2014 Grammys, are beginning to take note.
Azalea, who, for those of you who don’t know, is the Australian-born rapper whose real name is Amethyst Amelia Kelly, makes a point to school herself in fashion so she knows just what she’s talking about when she says things like, “I want to look like the girls the designers envisioned in their campaigns.” That means in her videos she seeks out designer duds on the regular, and that she was smart enough to make the strategic move to get a team together–Alejandra Hernandez for music video styling, Jason Rembert for the rest–to take her down the “rapper to red carpet” path.
That path wasn’t always easy; designers are more hesitant to dress musicians because they’re less predictable than actors, Rembert told the Times. But they persevered and ended up winning people over and getting her on the fashion week scene; she attended Chloé and Maison Martin Margiela last fall, where she made sure to dress to impress.
“I know how to play the game and get what I want,” she said to the Times. “Do you think what I wore to the Chloé show [pictured above] would really be something that I would wear? No. I picked the outfit out myself, because I know it’s appropriate and I know how to pander. I know what Chloé looks like, and being that I want to appease Chloé, because I would like some Chloé, I’m going to do my best job to be Chloé.”
We love a strong woman with a plan. Check out Iggy’s whole interview here–she discusses her love of sweats and a possible loungewear line in the works. We’d wear it!
